Learning the alphabet through song. Hugues Marie Duru was a teacher and publisher of various books and educational games. He gave up his activity to Léon Saussine in 1860. In this game, the educator must first sing the letters to the child with the help of notated music and six cut-out plates containing the verses. "For the last lesson, the child will sing the three verses by presenting the letters glued on wood [here on cardboard], each time they appear in the verses. The six cut-out plates depicting the couplets, very modern for the time with the initials on their spindly legs and depicting mothers and children, are by the engraver and lithographer Charles Mercereau (1822-1864), the letters appear to be by another hand. A, Watering can to Z, Zebra. Very rare set. Colored lithograph of the lid slightly soiled and meticulous restoration on the edges of the large box.
