DEVERIA (Achille). - Lot 156
DEVERIA (Achille). [Ornate alphabet]. Designed by A. Devéria. Lith. by A. Collette. Printed by Lemercier. Published by F. Delarue. Paris. [1854]. Large in-4 (31,1 x 26 cm). (35) ff. mounted on tabs : half tan basane, four-ribbed spine, mute, yellow edges. (Covers of the period binding, later basane). Extremely rare ornate alphabet, lithographed after the drawings of the painter and engraver Achille Devéria (1800-1857). In a double square frame (18,5 x 18,5 cm), large central initial mixed with a rich antique decoration of naked goddesses, putti, fantastic animals and vegetal interlacing. The plates bear, at the foot, the initials of the artist and those of the lithographer, Alexandre Collette (1814-1876). Only the doubled I offers, in the second illustration, a different Egyptian style. The suite of twenty-five letters is completed with two plates of decorations, the double letters (where the W appears), the ampersand and the drawing of the title page without the printed mentions. Copy of Prince Roland Bonaparte, with his bookplate and a handwritten note, where he explains that the I was not included in the publication, the letter O, stained, will have to be replaced by another proof to be searched in the defeats in Paris. This copy intended for his library of Terrafiel. Work offered to the prince by the son of Achille Devéria, Gabriel Devéria (1844-1899), and whose letter [with its envelope], accompanying the present, appears in the work. It is dated January 27, 1894, Gabriel Devéria explains that his father drew with a pen this ornate alphabet about forty years ago, that he was able to make sure that the "new processes of rotogravure can make of these letters charming reductions." Precious copy, very well preserved, with only the tiny defect, pointed out by the Prince, on the plate of the O.
