Die Wunderfahrt.
Lustige Bilder von Bortnyik Sandor mit Versen von Albert Sixtus. Alfred Hahns Verlag. Dietrich & Sell. Leipzig. [1929]. In-8 (21,7 x 19,6 cm). (40) pp. in publisher's blue cloth boards, large lithographed illustration in color on the front cover, a couple of young children carrying two kites, illustrated endpapers.
First edition of the only book for children drawn by the artist, and major actor of the Hungarian Avant-garde, Sandor Bortnyik (Romania 1893-1976 Budapest).
Hungarian painter, designer and poster artist, he made his first posters in 1910. In 1913, he decided to continue his training in Budapest in the school of the painters Rippl-Rónai, Kernstok and Vaszary. A member of the circle of the writer Lajos Kassak (1887-1967), he was influenced by expressionism, cubism and constructivism and exhibited with the avant-garde group Ma [Today] while illustrating their magazine. Emigrating to Vienna in 1920, then to Weimar, he established contacts with the Bauhaus and created an advertising agency with Max Buchartz (1887-1961). After the war, his intense activity combined publishing, teaching, painting, graphic design and advertising posters. His works, of the most sought-after, appear in the most famous public collections in the United States and in Europe.
Cover, endpapers and nineteen original plates, reproduced in lithography, from his avant-garde research. Vivid colors, geometric shapes and constructivist compositions.
"La Balade miraculeuse" is the one of Max and Marie dragged by their kites in the skies. Opposite the paintings, the eight lines of the story by Albert Sixtus (1892-1960) are printed in large type and centered on the white page.
Extremely rare work conceived by the painter at the top of his art.
