Pierre DECOURCELLE (1856-1926). 40 L.A.S. and 65 L.S., 1890- - Lot 76
Pierre DECOURCELLE (1856-1926). 40 L.A.S. and 65 L.S., 1890-1924, to various people: about 130 pages in various formats, several headings, some addresses. This correspondence allows us to scan the different activities and the work of Decourcelle: novels, theater, theatrical and cinematographic adaptations. Many letters are addressed to colleagues or journalists (Marcel Ballot, Henry Lapauze, Pierre Wolff...), requesting or thanking articles for his books (from 1890, for Fanfan), or his plays. One discovers the underbelly of the theatrical life, his difficulties of writing, the arrangements with the directors of theater. He talks about some of his plays: Mensonges (1889 adapted from Paul Bourget), L'Abbé Constantin, and especially the French adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (40 L.S. mostly to Robert Gangnat, 1908-1910). He writes to Abel Bonnard (May 18, 1911), asking him to give Calmette an article for the auction of his collection of paintings (especially the Latour). 7 L.S. on the letterhead of the Société Cinématographique des Auteurs & Gens de Lettres, which he founded in 1908 with Eugène Gugenheim (who also signs), concerning film adaptations of various authors: Romain Coolus, d'Ennery, Léon Gandillot, Madame Henry Greville, Georges Duval, etc. He announces Les Deux Gosses au Cirque de Paris (1917) and plans to shoot Le Crime du Docteur by Rosny Aîné. He quotes Robert de Flers, Feydeau, Matilde Serao, André Germain, Otto Friedrich... Two L.A.S. from Gaston de Caillavet to Robert de Flers, about their play Miquette, a L.A.S. from Decourcelle's widow for the theatrical adaptation of Sans famille (1927), and 3 letters addressed to Marcel Ballot for his play Les Amants légitimes.
