Superb manuscript with a perfectly executed calligraphy, written on more than 400 pages by Hypolite Joly, "employé au Dépôt de la Guerre".
This is how the latter presents his work:
"The goal that I proposed to myself, by composing historical Tablets on a reign whose glory was each day noted by new episodes, is not only to clear up the uncertainty too often produced by the comparison of different authors; but also to go quickly through the history of the Empire and to specify facts whose authenticity was not established.
Politics, which plays such an important role in General history, could not be detached from military facts, so I have confused the analysis of diplomatic acts with battles and combats. The result of this combination is that at a single glance one can see the conduct and intentions of all the Cabinets of Europe.
The text is preceded by two introductory pieces, one presenting the main periods in the life of Napoleon I and the second giving a record of the campaigns and travels undertaken by the emperor during his reign. The title is decorated in the center with a superb drawing of an imperial eagle.
Another manuscript by Hypolite Joly is known, executed in 1841 in 2 volumes, entitled Itinéraire de Napoléon Bonaparte pendant ses voyages et campagnes, quoted by Sacha Guitry, sold by Osenat on June 15, 2014. The author refers to it in his introduction.
