New posthumous edition, enlarged, of these precious historical memoirs by Nicolas de Neufville, seigneur de Villeroy (1542-1617), secretary of state of Charles IX, Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII. They were first published in 1622 and 1623 and contain mainly historical pieces such as speeches, many letters, dispatches, edicts, etc., precious for what concerns the administration of the kingdom, international affairs and of course the wars of religion.
Beautiful copy in contemporary calf with the arms of Anne Bretagne de Lannion (1682-1734), marquis of Lannion, "colonel of the regiment of his name on July 23, 1702, then of the regiment of Saintonge in November 1704 then brigadier of infantry on March 30, 1710. He succeeded his father in the governments of Vannes and Auray on May 27, 1717, was promoted to marshal of camp on February 1, 1719 and to lieutenant general on August 1, 1734. He died at Guastalla on December 28, 1734, from the wound he had received during this battle on September 19" (OHR, pl. 2080).
Bindings skilfully restored, the arms on some of the boards have however been partly erased. Two headpieces are missing.
Provenance:
