Marco Dente, known as of Ravenna (1490-1527) - Lot 24
Marco Dente, known as of Ravenna (1490-1527) The Battle with the Cutlass. Burin (probably after G. Romano). 460 x 320. Bartsch 211. Very nice proof on laid paper, trimmed to the subject. Two vertical black lines at the head, corresponding to defects (nicks or accidents) that occurred on the copper; another one on the left. Small freckles and traces of folds on the reverse. A few tiny holes visible by transparency. "The engraving of this print is usually attributed to Marc-Antoine [Raimondi], although, in our opinion, there is nothing to recall any of the different ways in which this artist executed his prints in the different periods of his life. It seems to us to be rather of Mark of Ravenna or of some other of his disciples. (Bartsch, Le Peintre-graveur illustré, volume XIV, p. 171).
