[REVOLUTION - EMPIRE].
Victories, conquests, disasters, setbacks and civil wars of the French, from 1792 to 1815, by a society of military men and people of letters.
Paris : C.L.F. Panckoucke, 1817-1822. - 27 volumes in-8, and an atlas in-folio, half calf, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (period binding for the volumes in-8 and modern binding for the atlas).
First edition of this ambitious collective work published by Charles-Louis-Fleury Panckoucke.
The illustration is composed of 170 maps and plans out of text, of which more than 100 folding, as well as of two plates ("View of the pyramids" in volume 9 and "Medal of the French victories" in volume 21).
The penultimate volume contains the "French Military Biography" as well as the long list of subscribers. The last volume contains the "Couronne poétique", that is to say "all the pieces of verse dedicated to celebrate the Victories of the French from 1792 to 1815", preceded by sixteen facsimiles out of text of autograph letters of Napoleon Bonaparte, Berthier, Brune, Davoust, Desaix, Dessolle, Hoche, Kellermann, Kléber, Marmont, Masséna, Moreau, Ney, Oudinot, Soult and Suchet.
Copy enriched with an atlas in-folio in modern binding, including 78 (out of 98 ?) plates after Ambroise Tardieu depicting historical monuments and scenes, 108 maps distributed on 67 leaves, numbered from 1 to 109, without the 42, and a large folding map "of the theater of the war, between the Mincio and the Adige to serve for the intelligence of the Campaign of 1796". The numbered maps are the same as those in the text volumes, so 62 are missing. Without the two volumes of portraits.
Some rubbing and wear to the bindings. Hinge of the first cover of the first volume cracked. Scattered foxing in the text volumes and very pronounced in the atlas with traces of wetness.
Provenance: Adolphe Vanoy, with his name stamped on the titles and his autograph signature accompanied by the date of February 20, 1874 on the first endpapers. - Lebarbier-Arnoux, with ex-libris.
