PERRET (Paul). - Lot 138
PERRET (Paul). Les Demoiselles de Liré. Paris : Boussod, Valadon et Cie, [1894]. - Large in-4, 352 x 246 : frontispiece, (2 ff.), 221 pp. (3 ff. last blank), 16 plates, printed cover. Pink calf, gilt framing on the boards, composed of fillets and four fleurons at the corners, decorated spine, inner gilt roulette, blue moiré silk lining and endpapers, double guards, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Durvand). First edition of this adventure and love novel by Paul Perret, set during the conspiracy known as the Prouvaires under Louis-Philippe and the small chouannerie of 1832. The illustration consists of 32 compositions, including 8 chapter headings, 8 culs-de-lampe and 16 hors-texts, engraved after the watercolors and drawings made by Maurice Leloir in collaboration with Charles Delort. The artists reproduce with a great realism the people, the fashions, the attitudes, the toilets of the 30s. All these engravings are under serpente captioned in red. ONE OF 20 NUMBERED COPIES ON WHATMAN PAPER, with all the illustrations specially printed in colors and enriched with a frontispiece with the effigy and arms of the Duchess of Berry, also in colors, as well as an original watercolor signed by Maurice Leloir on the false title. Very nice copy bound by Durvand. A very well preserved copy except for the slightly faded spine.
