ÉON (Charles de Beaumont d'). Letters, Memoirs & particular negotiations of the Chevalier d'Éon, Minister Plenipotentiary of France to the King of Great Britain; with M. M. the Dukes of Praslin, de Nivernois, de Sainte-Foy, & Regnier de Guerchy Ambassador Extraordinary, &c. &c. &c. The Hague: by H. Scheurleer; Frankfurt: the Van Dures brothers; London: Jaques Dixwell, 1764. [Followed by] : Last letter of the Chevalier d'Éon to M. le Comte de Guerchy, En Datte du 5 Août 1767, with the extract of the procedure in good form. London, 1767. - 4 parts in one volume in-4, fawn calf, double gilt fillet framing the boards, spine ribbed and decorated, speckled edges (period binding). Second edition published the same year as the original of the first three parts, and first edition of the "Last Letter". It is in fact the original edition of the first three parts, put back on sale following the publication of a pamphlet entitled "Examen des Lettres", with a new title, a warning and a copy "De la Vérification faite par un Notaire Public de Londres, de l'Ouvrage qui suit avec les Originaux dont ils ne sont qu'une Copie". These three parts are with separate pagination and with a particular title for the second and the third, respectively entitled: "Letters relating to the Particular Interests of the Chevalier d'Éon During his Stay in London" and "Particular Letters on the services of the Chevalier d'Éon, & His Attachment for the Ministers, his Procurators, Friends, or Concitines". The last letter appeared separately in 1767, it is rarely joined to the previous ones, as it is the case here. It bears on the title this motto: "The Sacrifice of my life was & will be for my king & my country, That of my honor will be for nobody." EXEMPLAIRE OF THE ENGLISH POLITICAL MAN JOHN BAKER HOLROYD, 1st COUNT OF SHEFFIELD (1735 - 1821). Copy complete with errata leaf bound in at the end. Spine, hinges and corners restored, second cover unbound. Provenance: John Baker Holroyd, with bookplate.
