[DUTOIT-MEMBRINI (Jean-Philippe). - Lot 45
[DUTOIT-MEMBRINI (Jean-Philippe). Of Onanism; or a Philosophical and Moral Discourse on Artificial Lust, & on all Related Crimes. [Followed by] TISSOT (Samuel Auguste André David). Onanism; or physical dissertation, on the diseases produced by masturbation. Translated from Latin by Mr. Tissot, D.M. And considerably increased by the Author. Lausanne : imprimerie d'Antoine Chapuis, 1760 - 2 works in one volume in-12, marbled calf, smooth spine decorated, red edges (binding of the time). First edition of these two works dedicated to the evils of masturbation. If these works seem to us today irrelevant or even ridiculous, it is necessary to remember that at the time masturbation was considered as a social plague and harmful to health. They are part of the numerous writings against this practice. The first work is the work of Jean-Philippe Dutoit-Membrini (1721-1793), a Swiss pastor close to esotericism, in which he threatens the "masturbators of hell". If his work quickly fell into oblivion, it is not the case of the one that follows, by Samuel Auguste Tissot (1728-1798), physician notably of the king of Poland and the prince-elector of Hanover. It was published in more than sixty editions between 1760 and 1905. Contrary to some of his contemporaries, Tissot advocated an alternative medicine using herbal remedies. Good copy in contemporary binding. Two corners slightly dulled. Provenance : Em. Guillon, with signature on verso of the first endpaper.
