Marco PALMEZZANO (Forlì, 1460 - 1539) - Lot 9
Marco PALMEZZANO (Forlì, 1460 - 1539) The Holy Family Panel doubled and mounted on frame Signed at the bottom center: "Marchus Palmezanus / Pictor foroliuiensis / faciebat 59 x 75 cm (Old restorations) Provenance: - Collection of Count Lochis of Bergamo, sale in Paris on April 3, 1868, no. 6. - Sale in Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Mes Bellier et Boisgirard, June 28, 1934, n° 18. In 1835, Count Guglielmo Lochis (1789 - 1859) was appointed head of acquisitions for the Bergamo city museum, the Academia Carrara. He personally assembled a collection of about five hundred works in his Villa delle Crocetta in Mozzo, which he bequeathed to the city of Bergamo. This bequest constitutes the main collection of 15th and 16th century paintings in the Bergamo Museum and includes famous masterpieces by Crivelli, Bellini, Raphael (St. Sebastian), Lotto, Moroni, as well as 17th century paintings and 18th century "vedute" (Guardi). Following negotiations with his heir, Carlo, the Academia Carrara obtained two thirds of the ensemble and the rest were left to the family who sold them. After completing his initial training with his compatriot Melozzo da Forli, Marco Palmezzano moved to Rome in the early 1490's. After a short stay in Venice where he assimilated the work of Giovanni Bellini, he returned to his native city. He spent the rest of his long career there, receiving numerous commissions in the region. Our composition can be compared to other conversations of the artist where the pose of the three figures is the same (Forli, Collezione Fondazione Casa de Risparmo; Budapest, Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, dated in the 1520s). A remake of our painting is reported in an unknown location, referenced in the fototeca Zeri under n°57931.
