Sumptuous period binding by Henri Noulhac, whose decoration was designed by Adolphe Giraldon.
This artist was one of the first illustrators to propose drawings for the decoration of bindings. The ones with one of his designs are very interesting for the history of French bookbinding in particular and the history of books in general. Indeed, "tired of retrospective decorations, amateurs became more demanding and asked more willingly a decorative artist than a bookbinder to make a composition more directly inspired by the very nature of the work to be dressed" (Giraldon, un artiste du livre, 2017, p. 243).
Giraldon collaborated with Paul Affolter, René Aussourd, Georges Canape, Georges Cretté, David, Léon Gruel, René Kieffer, Robert Joly, Charles Lanoë, Marcellin Lortic, Mercier, Charles Meunier and of course Henri Noulhac. The latter was one of the bookbinders he appreciated the most, and vice versa. Noulhac asked him to take his daughter Madeleine as a collaborator in order to supervise her artistic education. This collaboration bore its fruits because a great number of Noulhac's bindings were later realized with his daughter who signed the decorations.
A perfectly preserved copy.
