LESSON (René-Primevère). - Lot 122
LESSON (René-Primevère). The Trochilidae or hummingbirds and hummingbirds, followed by a general index, in which are described and methodically classified all the races and species of the genus trochilus. Paris : Arthus Bertrand, 1832-[1833]. - In-8, 231 x 147 : (2 ff.), iv, xliij, 171 pp., 66 plates. Red half-chagrin, cold fillets on the boards, spine with raised bands, spotted edges (binding of the time). First edition. This study constitutes the third volume that the naturalist and traveler René-Primevère Lesson (1794-1849) devoted to the natural history of fly-birds. It was preceded by the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux-mouches (1829-1830) and the Histoire naturelle des colibris, followed by a supplement to the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux-mouches (1830-1832). This volume appeared in issues in 1832 and 1833 and includes sixty-six color plates of the described birds, engraved by Marie Nicolas Oudet after drawings by Jean Gabriel Prêtre (1769-1849) and Antoine Germain Bevalet (1779-1850). It also includes, introduced by a proper title, a general and synoptic index of birds of the genus trochilus. EXAMPLE WITH A BEAUTIFUL AUTOGRAPHIC LETTER SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, ADDRESSED TO DELPHINE NOURRY, one page in-8, dated Rochefort, 15 October 1833. It is mostly about the work: "Madame your sister is kind enough to give you a few issues of Les Oiseaux-mouches. Only one issue remains to be published to complete this work, and soon I hope to be able to send it to you. It will then remain for me to thank you for the kindness with which you have welcomed this diversion from serious studies, and a work that is futile no doubt, but to which I am egotistically attached, because I owe it sweet distractions. " Copy in a slightly later binding, made around 1850 . Some foxing. The leaves of the plates are as always browned. Plate 9 and the preceding text leaf are partly disbound.
