[CURIOSA - BOYER D'ARGENS (Jean-Baptiste). - Lot 64
[CURIOSA - BOYER D'ARGENS (Jean-Baptiste). Thérèse philosophe, or memoirs to serve as a history of D. Dirrag, & of Mademoiselle Eradice. - Thérèse philosophe, with the history of Mrs. Bois-Laurier. London, 1785. - 2 volumes in-18, 126 x 79 : frontispiece, 161 pp, (1 blank f.), 8 plates ; (2 ff.), 80 pp, (2 blank ff.), 11 plates. Rotted calf, triple gilt fillet on the boards, smooth spine decorated, gilt border inside, gilt edges (period binding). Dutel, A-1092 - Fontaine, Cazin, l'éponyme galvaudé, p. 209. New edition of this great classic of erotic literature first attributed to Arles de Montigny and then to the philosopher and man of letters Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, marquis d'Argens (1704-1771) . The work was first published in 1748 and was immediately banned, but this did not prevent it from being reprinted many times. It is a novel of initiation both pornographic and philosophical, promoting impiety rather than lust. It was inspired by the 1731 trial of the Jesuit Father Jean-Baptiste Girard (Dirrag in the novel) against the young 17-year-old penitent Catherine Cadière (Éradice in the novel), both mystic and forger, whom he had seduced while he was her confessor and rector of the Séminaire royal des aumôniers de la marine in Toulon. This false Cazin edition is illustrated with 20 free engravings out of text in the first edition, including one in the frontispiece, engraved by François-Roland Elluin after the drawings of Antoine Borel. At the end of the second volume is a poem entitled Jouissance, unrelated to the text of the novel. Usual rubbing to the bindings, small lack to the head cap of the second volume, dull corners. Several leaves off-set.
