[ENLUMINATION]. Leaf from an antiphonary, historiated initial "D" depicting Jesus calling the fishermen Andrew and SimonIn Latin, leaf from a parchment manuscript, music notated (Hufnagelschrift notation), 4-line staves drawn in brown ink, rubrics in red, initials painted in red, illuminated decoration in the left margin . Some abrasions to the gilding and rubbing in the lower left part of the folio, but otherwise fine condition. Southern Germany, Bavaria (Augsburg?), circa 1450-1470. historiated initial attributable to Johannes Bämler and his workshop (active in Augsburg, 1430-1503) . Dimensions : 360 x 500 mmThis historiated initial "D" introduces the Vigil of Saint Andrew: "Dominus secus mare galyle..." . Johannes Bämler (1430-1503) was a copyist, illuminator and bookseller based in Augsburg. He began his career as a copyist and calligrapher, and later became a printer (1472). Manuscripts illuminated by him are preserved (New York, PML, MS. M. 45, bifeuillet from a confraternity book, Augsburg, 1457; Münich, BSB, Cgm 82, Psalter, dated 1484; Münich, BSB, Clm 2975, manuscript for the Cistercians of Aldersbach bei Passau and passim) but also illuminated incunabula. On Johannes Bämler, see Sheila Edmunds, "New Light on Johannes Bamler," in Journal of the Printing Historical Society, 1993, no. 22. Parallels can be drawn between the present folio and the one in the Cleveland Museum of Art, from the same Augsburg circle: Jeanne Miles Blackburn Collection 2014.25 (Initial H with Nativity). A comparison can also be made with a manuscript, Missel à l'usage de Salzbourg, [Augsburg or Salzburg, ca. 1480] (Paris, Aldus, Vente Burrus, 17 October 2017, lot 69), painted by Johannes Bälmer (see Christine Beier, "Missalien massenhaft. Die Bämler-Werkstatt und die Augsburger Buchmalerei im 15. Jahrhundert," in Codices manuscripti, 2004 (H. 48/49), pp. 55-72).
