Ibrahima Sory Sanlé began his photographic career in Bobo-Dioulasso the year his country gained its independence in 1960. As a young apprentice to a Ghanaian photographer, he worked with a camera, before developing and printing, and then moving on to the 6x6 format like most African photographers of his generation. A privileged witness to the rapid evolution of his country and his city, long the economic and cultural capital of Upper Volta, Sanlé expresses in images the head-on collision that occurred between modern life and the traditions of the Hauts Bassins region. He began his career photographing road accidents. In the mid-1960s, he set up the Volta Photo studio, which was to become the great studio of Bobo-Dioulasso. As a photographer who is committed to his work, he follows his motto to the letter, "when you love something, you give yourself totally to your passion". A prolific photographer, he distinguishes himself from the competition of the three other large local studios, thanks to his painted backgrounds, designed by himself, whether it is a modern city, a seashore, an ancient column or an airplane bridge. Whether still or in motion, his subjects evoke the distant and melancholy daily life of the landlocked cities of the African continent, but also the vitality of the Voltaic youth. His astute eye documents with an unfeigned candor to the fusion operating then between tradition and modernity.
