Executed by the founder Thiébaut Frères, the monument was first placed in Montholon Square before joining the collections of the Petit Palais museum in Paris. A bronze sketch dating from 1872 is kept at the Musée d'Orsay. Given the success of the model, the sculptor established a publishing contract with the foundry Barbedienne in 1877.
