A very old and rare pair of statues of ancestors with scarif - Lot 62
A very old and rare pair of statues of ancestors with scarified faces, the man wears a shaved headdress in a crest, and each is adorned with a bronze necklace. The style of these two very old sculptures with intense looks, carved in very dense wood, with round and contained volumes, place them among the gurunsi, a pejorative name that the Lobi gave to their Nuna neighbors. The position of the woman's arms is also emblematic of Kulango art, whose influence here is possible, but may refer to a dance posture. The great antiquity of this couple testifies to ancient "marriages" that specific studies on Lobi art and recent publications still have great difficulty in identifying because the tradition is so old. Nuna (Gurunsi) or Lobi, Burkina Faso or Ivory Coast. Hard wood, bronze, erosion and important desiccation of age, visible lacks (old breaks), superb patina of use. H. 92 cm and H. 75 cm Provenance : Christian Debenest Collection Publication: Pierre Bergé & Associés sale - La Collection d'un Amateur - April 8, 2016, lot 84 pages 64 and 65
