WAR OF 1914-1918. 110 L.A.S. from the nurse Edmond COURTOIS - Lot 440
WAR OF 1914-1918. 110 L.A.S. from the nurse Edmond COURTOIS addressed to his mother in La Roquebrussanne (Var), or vice versa; letters, cards to the flags, letter-cards, correspondence-cards; plus 20 passes.
Interesting correspondence from a nurse, from the trenches to the Balkans. The letters concern various postal sectors (13, 51, 167, 171), the last ones from S.P. 514 (Balkans). As a cyclist for the medical officer of the 43rd Colonial Infantry Regiment, Courtois relates his daily life as well as the military events. We will only give a few brief excerpts.
1915. "Let's go to the trenches ... we are 900m from the trenches and we are going up there this evening; we hear the cannon, the shells, we are going to kill some of the Boche ... some of the Boche are continually spraying us with bullets ... the roof of the town hall is all dilapidated and we stayed there, if you saw these houses dilapidated by the shells it would make you feel sorry, finally it is the war and we became so to speak savages, we feel animated by a fierce hatred against our enemies... I arrive from the trench and we spent 4 days and 4 nights there "...
1917. "We are in the Balkans, in the region of Monastir ... violent bombardment all afternoon, there is breakage and I announce you the death of a comrade, a shell surprised him in full sleep in a house killing him cleanly, he had a perforating wound in the head and chest in the region of the heart ... tonight at nightfall the battalion goes up in line ... we have a large square tent 3 m high and 20 m long ... I wear a cap or a kepi instead of a helmet, on formal order we must never leave the large flannel belt, we can take it off during the day but we must put it on when we go to bed "...
