Charles-François CHALUPT (1816-1890) notary clerk, then coll - Lot 372
Charles-François CHALUPT (1816-1890) notary clerk, then collector of rents. Autograph manuscript, Souvenirs intimes, circa 1886; 4 notebooks in-4 (21 x 16,5 cm) of about 200 pages each, bound in beige cloth. Interesting intimate autobiography of a wealthy Parisian, music lover and dilettante, from 1839 to 1864. Each notebook is numbered. The set is incomplete: we have nos. 3 to 8 (which is not the last one). The pages are filled with a small and very legible writing. These recollections are written by year, each year corresponding to a chapter. The set goes from the end of chap. XI (1839) to chap. XXXIV (1864, of which the end is missing). At the head of each chapter, the author has drawn up a brief summary. Thus, for 1840: "The families of Vendeuvre and Joly, M.M. Courtat and Tourneux. The Vandervleit family. Guillot's trip to Italy. His confidences and impressions. The fire of Babylonia. Acosta. Mr. and Mad. Orfila. Transport of the mortal remains of Emperor Napoleon I to the Invalides"; each of these headings is then numbered. Chalupt tells in detail about his walks and trips, the concerts and shows he attends, the events he witnesses; he gives many details about the people he meets (copying letters received), about his private life, etc. He relates the life of the notary's office (personnel, important successions, jokes, etc.). As an amateur singer, he performs in salons with success, participating in private performances (Don Pasquale, the Barber of Seville...), and follows with passion the lyric news, giving a lot of details about singers (Mme Damoreau, Ponchard, etc.). It is difficult to summarize this thousand pages. Let us point out some dates, with their highlights. 1842 : the death of the Duke of Orleans, a "toquade" for the actress Mme Plessy. 1843 : he renewed his relationship with his mistress Louise Lassieur, the birth of their daughter Nelly, the Ventadour theater, dinner at General Jomini's, with Rubini and the Falcon. 1844 : the National Guard, swimming. 1845 : Amédée de Beauplan, succession of the Marquis de Talhouët, stay at Saint-Martin d'Ablois, masked ball at the Opera. 1846 : marriage of his sister Aimée with the lieutenant Heuillet, the Count de Vignolles and his family, trip to Nantes and Bordeaux. 1847 : successions of Count Roy and Countess de Castellane. 1848 : revolution and February days, clubs, workshops, June days, election of the President of the Republic. 1849 : travels in the South of France (Cette, Montpellier, Nîmes, Marsseille) then to Algiers, Bougie. 1850 : his portrait by Millet father, Rubini. 1851 : Archdeacon's estate, evening at the Caumont-La Force, the coup d'état. 1852 : masked ball at Rubini's, Parisian salons, Corot and Lavieille, new trip to Algeria. 1853 : affair with a married woman named Claire, Juliette Borghèse. 1854 : succession of the Countess of Lariboisière, the painter Gaspard Lacroix, the musician Emile Millet, the architect Alfred Armand. 1855 : succession of the marquise d'Osmond. 1856 : he took over the office of Mr. Belin, travelled to Alsace and Germany, stayed in Baden. 1857 : the Sieyès family, death of his mother. 1858 : death of the Marquis de Contades, marriage of Chalupt with Constance Lagache, widow of Henri Duriez. 1859 : moved to rue Vivienne, birth of their son Charles. 1862 : New apartment on rue de Port-Mahon, trip to Montreuil-sur-mer, the Lagache family. 1863 : stay in Boulogne, trip to London, death of his wife. 1864 : Ernest Bouju, purchase of paintings (Bonvin, Jules Dupré)... There are enclosed 3 autographed notebooks of Variety, notably on the life of his Parisian district (Gaillon district), the Universal Exhibition of 1889, memories of travels in Switzerland and in the water cities (Vichy, Plombières, Uriage); and a l.s. from Alfred Maury to Chalupt concerning his grandfather (1872). Plus 4 sketchbooks (by his son Charles?); 2 theater manuscripts, and one translation of Christophe Schmid's Little Tales; an illustrated album (printed at 100 copies) of scenes of bullying at Saint-Cyr (1885-1887) by G. de Grandmaison; a household account book (1837-1840).
