HUGO (Victor). - Lot 85
HUGO (Victor). Le Roi s'amuse, drama. Paris : Librairie d'Eugène Renduel, 1832. - In-8, dark blue half-maroquin with corners, gilt fillets, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (A. Cuzin). First edition of this famous drama by Victor Hugo, first performed on November 12, 1832 at the Théâtre-Français. This play had a particular and eventful destiny. It was effectively suspended the day after the first performance by ministerial letter. The author was reproached for his political charge against the monarchy. Hugo then sued the Théâtre-Français to protest against the banning of his play and echoed his fight in the preface that opens this edition. The edition is illustrated on the frontispiece with a beautiful woodcut vignette on chine collé after a composition by Tony Johannot. One of the rare copies on large vellum paper (232 x 141 mm). A very fine copy with full margins, bound by Cuzin, including at the end the 20-page Renduel catalogue for September 1832, lined cover, spine lined and restored with missing parts .
