Maurice rostand. Autograph manuscript, L'Immortel, [1946]; 2 - Lot 273
Maurice rostand. Autograph manuscript, L'Immortel, [1946]; 22 pages in-4 in black ink on bluish paper, some erasures and corrections (small tears on last few pages). Script in three parts, combining a fantasy tale and a medieval morality play. The story features Sinclair, a lively squire with a complex personality; his friend, the philosopher Aimery; Aimery's daughter, Ephemera, who is dying; and Sybil, Duchess of Ableiges, Sinclair's mistress. Living surrounded by the portraits of his ancestors, Sinclair seems to have attained immortality; he would have been alive for at least five centuries. This revelation worries Ephemera and upsets her love for Sinclair, while everyone outside is jealous of her secret. Insurgents set fire to the castle. Sinclair, aided by the pious Ephemera, finds the key to the riddle, and even as smoke and flames threaten them, he says with her "the supreme prayer, [...] the essential creed that concentrates all the hope of the world," with increasing fervor until "'I believe in the resurrection of the flesh and in life everlasting.' "Your only eternal life," whispers Ephemera." Attached is a receipt of deposit of the manuscript with the Association of Film Authors, September 24, 1946.
