Maurice DELAGE (1879-1961). 3 L.A.S., Paris February-July 19 - Lot 74
Maurice DELAGE (1879-1961). 3 L.A.S., Paris February-July 1955, to René Chalupt; 3 pages in-4, and one obl. in-8, 2 envelopes. About Ravel's correspondence of which Chalupt is preparing an edition. February-March: "I have a very vague recollection of some criticisms of the Bolero as to the relentless form of an undeveloped 'rondo'. But the Spanish orthodoxy was not in question, and Ravel never mentioned it in our conversations. He puts at her disposal all the letters that could be included in his collection and that his collaborator Marcelle Gérar could consult. July 19: about the graphological analysis of Ravel's handwriting that he finds "erroneous for three quarters. The remainder benefits from a rather vague form, although often incoherent". He dismantles the assertions of the graphologist and paints a portrait of Ravel: "not vain, not proud, not ambitious either. But meticulous, and so careful in the detail of his works, with an implacable and marvelous logic. His intelligence was not intuitive, but thoughtful. [...] I will quote you a thousand facts that make me describe this naive, paradoxical and closed nature, keeping us well away from mixing sensibility and sensuality "... An autograph visiting card (31/1/56) congratulating and thanking Chalupt for Ravel in the mirror of his letters is attached. Plus a draft of a letter from Chalupt to Delage, and a double dactyl.
