LESAGE (Alain-René). History of Gil Blas de Santillane. Paris : J.-J. Dubochet et Cie, 1838. - In-8, 267 x 172 : portrait, 829 pp. Salmon cloth, smooth spine decorated with a gilt fleuron, untrimmed (Pierson). New edition illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Gil Blas and more than 600 vignettes in the text, after compositions by Jean Gigoux (1806-1894). This is a reprint, printed in smaller type, of the 1835 edition, with 47 new vignettes in the first printing. PRECIOUS EXAMPLE OF CHAMPFLEURY, DEDICATED ON THE SECOND BLANKET BY JEAN GIGOUX : to my friend Champfleury // souvenir of the old times // Jean GigouxThe dedication of Gigoux on this title is extremely rare. This dedication was made around 1880, at the time of the binding. The artist also made a self-portrait in graphite on page 73. Champfleury devoted a passage to Gigoux in his work Les Vignettes romantiques published in 1883: "Who speaks of Jean Gigoux, around 1834, evokes the reflection of a draughtsman à la Velazquez, raising with bold strokes the beautiful edition of Gil Blas, the first one that traced a deep furrow in the order of "illustration", and certainly will remain. Never had the vignette on wood shown so much valour. The color thus spread on the boxwood by Gigoux was really color; the painter communicated virility to the engravers' burins" (Les Vignettes romantiques, p. 293). Copy enriched with the first plate of a delivery cover. Soiling to the binding. Stained cover of delivery. Provenance : Champfleury, with a letter from the illustrator. - Ex-libris monogrammed engraved by Stern.
