ANGLEMONT (Édouard Hubert Scipion d'). - Lot 102
ANGLEMONT (Édouard Hubert Scipion d'). Légendes françaises. Paris: L. Dureuil, 1829. [Followed by]: Nouvelles légendes françaises. [Paris: Mame-Delaunay, 1833]. - 2 works in one volume in-8, 208 x 130 : (2 ff.), VIII, 268 pp. (V)-X, 294 pp. Black half-chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated, spotted edges (binding around 1850). First edition of these two collections of poetic legends. The first one is illustrated with a woodcut vignette after Achille Devéria on the title. "This collection is indeed what it announces : a poetic chronicle ; but a chronicle where the legend, the old traditions which were transmitted from old men to old men storytellers at the corner of the fireplace, in the winter evenings or in the village rounds, have more part than the truth itself. A picturesque, dramatic and moving mixture of reality and fantasy, of truth and imagination, of history and folklore. It was a novelty. The French Legends, by the whole of the thought, of the inspiration, like by the form not at all lyric, but half familiar, half heroic and a little archaic, distinguish themselves from all the verses of Ballades which one had already published in so great number ". (Asse, Les Petits romantiques, pp. 243-244). In the Nouvelles légendes, published 4 years later, the author took up the poetic pen again to propose this time legends where witchcraft and apparitions have an even greater part than in the previous collection. PRECIOUS EXAMPLE OF THE WOMAN OF LETTERS JULIE RÉCAMIER (1777-1849), bearing this letter from the author on the false title: to Madame Récamier // Homage from the authorEach legend is dedicated to a personality from the world of letters or the artistic world . Madame Récamier is the dedicatee of the third legend of the Nouvelles légendes françaises, entitled Mélusine. A good copy of which the two volumes were bound together in the years 1850-60 . Freckles, light wetness on the edges of the last leaves. Missing the false title and the title of the second collection, the latter was to be illustrated with a vignette after Tony Johannot.
