FORAIN (Jean-Louis) - CARAN D'ACHE.
Psst...!
Paris : Librairie Plon, 1898-1899. - 85 fascicles bound in 1volume in-folio, 40 x28 cm. bound with La Vie illustrés (2 supplements on the Dreyfus affair).
Bound in cloth, brown leather title-piece, splits at the junction between the boards and the spine.
Complete collection of the 85 issues of this satirical anti-Dreyfus weekly newspaper published by the painter Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931) and the cartoonist Caran d'Ache (1859-1909). It appeared from 5 February 1898 to 16 September 1899, coinciding with the end of the Dreyfus affair, from the trial of Émile Zola before the Seine Court of Assize to the end of Alfred Dreyfus's review trial. Each issue consists of two sheets illustrated with black caricatures of the two artists.
According to Bertrand Tillier, in Les artistes et l'affaire Dreyfus: 1898-1908: "Forain and Caran d'Ache already had solid experience of the image and its qualities... The subtitle of Psst...! praised [...] the collaboration of two caricaturists as experienced as they were renowned [...] and while it also insisted on the exclusivity of the images, it praised the complementary nature of the registers and manners of Forain ("bitter irony, the line that pierces, the caption that bites") on the one hand, and Caran d'Ache ("current events put into picturesque images, when they are not treated in the manner of paintings") on the other. Indeed, the psst...! sought to reconcile two graphic universes, two satirical tones and two visions of the Dreyfus Affair, which brought together anti-Semitic, xenophobic, Germanophobic, Catholic, nationalist, militarist, anti-republican, anti-naturalist and anti-Zolean opinions." (Les artistes et l'affaire Dreyfus : 1898-1908, Champ Vallon, 2009, pp. 199-200).
