MAUPASSANT (Guy de). - Lot 572
MAUPASSANT (Guy de). Une partie de campagne. Paris : Société des Bibliophiles contemporains, 1892. - Large in-8, 266 x 177 : (4 ff. 2 first blanks), 18 pp, (3 blanks), illustrated cover. Dark green morocco, mosaic iris composition gilt on the first cover, spine ribbed, multiple gilt fillet inside, grey brocaded silk lining and endpapers with green and beige flowers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover preserved, full dark green morocco slipcase (Marius Michel). Vicaire, I, 515. Beautiful edition of the tenth and last tale of the collection of Maupassant's Contes choisis published by the Société des Bibliophiles contemporains, printed, according to Vicaire, at 188 copies on watermarked vellum in the name of the author and of the collection . The justification reads as follows: "This tale by Guy de Maupassant, composed in Didot type, was printed for the Contemporary Bibliophiles among the members . It has not been illustrated, each member of the Académie des Beaux Livres having to reserve the right to have it decorated in the margins with original drawings by such artists as they may choose". This copy was enriched at the time with a frontispiece in colours by Henri Boutet and 9 BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL AQUARELLES BY THE PAINTER ROGER JOSEPH JOURDAIN (1845-1918), spread over the title and seven pages, occupying the whole page or part of the margins. Only the last one is signed by the artist. Jourdain was a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts and one of the founders of the Société des aquarellistes français. The copy has also been enriched with a L.A.S. from Guy de Maupassant, 1 page in-16, written from the chalet des Alpes in Antibes, addressed to an admirer: "You ask me to write to you, which is not easy when you don't know to whom you are addressing. To write to someone, a figure, the figure of that someone, must be drawn between your eyes and the paper. Now, between this sheet and me there is nothing; that is why I put nothing either in this letter which answers an unknown whim". Very beautiful mosaic binding by Marius Michel. Provenance: Léon Rattier, with ex-libris.
