Paul de MUSSET (1804-1880). L.A.S., Bourron 19 August 1864, - Lot 310
Paul de MUSSET (1804-1880). L.A.S., Bourron 19 August 1864, to a Maestro; 3 pages in-8. About a lyrical adaptation of her brother Barberine's comedy, Barberine. The young collaborator the Maestro had in mind does not seem to have the strength to do so: "In the two samples of his know-how that I have before me, I notice little logic, a light mind, easy to please, which seems to run after words and rhymes, in a dazed state, without worrying about common sense and reason. The pickers' second verse is both flat and pretentious in expression. The aunt's are no better. If this Aunt Beatrix is virtuous, what does it mean: she's been close to adventures? "... Besides, he shares his brother's antipathy for rich rhymes "which are placed like double-six in dominoes, for the pleasure of rhyming richly at the expense of sense and often common sense. The rhymes attacked by this disease are not cured by it. It is due to a void of ideas for which nothing can be substituted, or to a blind self-esteem that makes you admire everything that comes into your head...". He finds Michel Carré stronger, and is reluctant to see the Maestro return to the theatre with this young man as a collaborator. Barberine's choice for a comic opera is the best, Fantasio being a character rather than a play, and what young girls dream of being in verse. "You have the talent, my dear Maestro; have patience and courage, and you will get to the goal"...
