Pierre LOTI. 24 L.A.S. (one unsigned), 1884-1894, to Marcel - Lot 287
Pierre LOTI. 24 L.A.S. (one unsigned), 1884-1894, to Marcel Sémézies in Montauban; about 50 pages most in-12 or in-8, 2 envelopes. Attached are 3 telegrams, an invitation card and a business card with autogr. additions, an a.s. dedication cut out of his speech of reception at the Academy, from Pierre Loti to Sémézies; an autogr. card from Mrs. Julien Viaud to the same; an L.A.S. from Émile Pouvillon to Sémézies about Loti; and 6 L.A.S. from Samuel Loti-Viaud to the same. Very nice friendly and literary correspondence, first signed "Julien Viaud" then " Pierre Loti". He left Memoirs of my life and my time (Montauban, 2004)]. The correspondence begins at the beginning of their friendship, in 1884, when Sémézies visited Loti in Rochefort: "you will have a certain disenchantment when you see the very ordinary boy and 'like everyone else' that I am. Too bad, I receive you with great pleasure"... Thanks for sending a poem: although he does not generally like verses, "I like them when they are pretty and I assure you I liked the sonnet very much [...]; only you have painted my house too beautifully, and the women will dream about it"... Loti's stay in Montauban: "Thank you to the Musketeers [Les Mousquetaires gris, a literary group founded by Sémézies] for the good reception I received"... Congratulations for Sémézies' novel L'Étoile éteinte (Ollendorff 1886), "a very nice book [...] written by a boy at heart - come on, you're a nice little musketeer, you're talented and I shake your hand and tell you a thousand g
