Felicity of LAMENNAIS (1782-1854). L.A.S., Paris December 14 [1830], to Augustin Périer, deputy of Isère; 2 pages in-8, address.
4 L.A.S., to M. de Musigny (on Dr. Allin's fees, 1825), to the bookseller Jean-François Delion (on the sale of his books, 1852), to Émile Forgues (2, requesting the loan of books by Balzac, Ph. Chasles, etc.). Plus an L.A.S. of his brother Jean-Marie after an "odious article" against his brother in Le Drapeau blanc, a lithographed portrait of Delpech, and the delivery of the Galerie de la Presse to him
(1838).
On the revision of the Charter and religious freedom [Périer was a member of the commission in charge of the revision]. "In regard to the very important question to which your report relates, it is my intimate conviction that the Government is abusing itself in a manner very dangerous to itself and to us, if it believes that it can, against the promises made, against the spirit of the times and the general vow, deny religious liberty, incompatible with the ties which still bind Church and State. Let there be no mistake, the spirit of freedom penetrates the Catholic masses on all sides. Look at Ireland, Belgium and Poland. The movement is given to France, from where it will later pass into Italy and Spain itself. But is it wise to force the Catholics to conquer by legal opposition what they rightly regard as their most sacred right? Can power not be shaken in this struggle? Is there much respect for what must be fought perpetually? See, on all points in France, how painful the contact between civil authority and religion is today; and it will become more painful day by day. Who knows what may result from this? Freedom is the great remedy; it alone will unite the French people among themselves and with their government"...
