Henri-Dominique LACORDAIRE (1802-1861) Dominican, preacher a - Lot 273
Henri-Dominique LACORDAIRE (1802-1861) Dominican, preacher and pedagogue. L.A.S., Notre-Dame de Chalais 26th May 1846, to the viscount of Falloux; 3 pages in-4, address. A very beautiful letter on religious freedom, and on Church and State, in response to an article in Falloux: "The question you deal with is perhaps the most important and difficult question in the world [...] and it does not seem to me that your work answers in breadth, lucidity and depth to the subject in question. Is the propagation of religious error, by its nature, justiciable by human laws? Assuming that it was, by its nature, justiciable, are there not more disadvantages than advantages to repressing it in this way? If it is not, of its nature, is it never necessary to repress it civilly as a pure defense against the oppression whose truth it burdens? In what capacity has the Church, in concert with the state, repressed the spread of religious error? Was it by virtue of an absolute right, or by virtue of the transitory circumstances in which society found itself? Is the union of all social forces, divine and human, for the maintenance and propagation of truth the true order in itself, and is religious liberty only a true order in relation to time and place; or is it the reverse? Is religious liberty a progress in the past, or a transition to a new social truth? [...] should we blame the Church in the past, or praise her, or simply justify her? ...] how can it be justified? This, my dear friend, is the series of questions which it would be necessary to examine in order to arrive at your goal. ...] everywhere and always the spread of religious ideas has been civilly repressed ...; no one can say what will come out of the new regime .... Etc.
