Giacomo MEYERBEER (1791-1864). L.A.S. (incomplete from the beginning), [1847], to a Mylady [Priscilla Fane, countess of Westmorland]; 1 page in-4 (some gaps including the end of the signature, repairs). To his patron, wife of the founder of the Royal Academy of Music, Minister Plenipotentiary in Prussia, violinist and composer Westmorland, about an engagement in London [in 1847, Meyerbeer gave Her Majesty's Theater, directed by Benjamin Lumley, his Robert the Devil, who saw Jenny Lind's triumph on May 4 in her London debut]. It would be appropriate for him to make his decision known at Covent Garden Theatre at some point in time. "If I did not fear to be indiscreet, & to abuse too much of his goodness, I dare to beg you Mylady to say this to Mr. Lumley when he comes to pay his respects, for I would not wish to write to him, having an invincible repugnance for anything that may resemble [emulate] from afar the offering of my music to a director. He evokes Julian, Milady's son, begging her to "remind him of the young & kind protector of music, the author of these filial letters so delicate & tender, to this son. I would like to have one of his poems to set it to music"...
