Marcel LABEY (1875-1968). Signed autograph manuscript, Schol - Lot 129
Marcel LABEY (1875-1968). Signed autograph manuscript, Schola Cantorum. Lesson of Mr Vincent d'Indy. Histoire de la musique, 1897 ; 165 pages in-4 numbered on lined paper, in sheets under cloth-backed folder. We enclose two other autograph manuscripts by Marcel Labey: Notes sur le chant grégorien pris au cours d'Amédée Gastoué (13 p. petit in-fol.), and his dissertation presented at the end of the composition course at the Schola cantorum (June 18, 1907): De l'influence d'une idée extra-musicale sur la musique sans paroles et de quelques de ses manifestations, bearing a few annotations by Vincent d'Indy in the margins (notebook in-4 of 23 pages). Interesting testimony on Vincent d'Indy's classes at the Schola Cantorum. The manuscript is carefully written in black ink, and illustrated with numerous musical examples, with a table of contents. The end is missing, the manuscript being interrupted during the study of César Franck's Symphony; according to the table of contents, the chapters on chamber music, variation, fantasy, overture and symphonic poem are missing after the section devoted to Vincent d'Indy symphonist . The course begins with the evolution of the musical art and musical forms: the motet, the répons, the madrigal, the fugue, the prelude, the rondeau, the Italian, French, German suites (Bach). A long part is devoted to the sonata, with a study of different composers: Corelli, Bach, his family and contemporaries, Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven's predecessors; a detailed study of Beethoven and the modern sonata explains the genesis and nature of the musical idea, its development, the tonal structure, and defines the various movements of the sonata (andante, minuet-scherzo, rondo); it gives an analysis of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, the 10 violin sonatas and the 5 for piano and cello. The Romantic (Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann) and modern (Raff, Rubinstein, César Franck, Saint-Saëns, Fauré)
