Giorgio de chirico (1888-1978). L.A.S., Paris May 24, 1924, - Lot 33
Giorgio de chirico (1888-1978). L.A.S., Paris May 24, 1924, to Jacques Rouché; 2 pages in-4 (some small marginal cracks). On his sets for Albert Roussel's ballet Bacchus et Ariane (premiered at the Opera on May 22, 1931). "I am very surprised (not to say disgusted) by the way I was treated at the Opera on the occasion of the premiere of Bacchus and Ariadne; the speacker who came at the end of the ballet to announce the names of the authors avoided pronouncing mine; yet it seems to me that when artists of my stature and fame are invited to collaborate in the theatre, they are not treated as mere suppliers. - If I had known that this would have happened, I would never have agreed, not only for the irrisisory sum of 6,000 francs, but even for 60,000 francs, to lend my work to this ballet. It seems to me that what I have done is worth at least as much as what M.M. Abel Hermant and Roussel do; I would like to see this ballet stripped of my curtains, sets and costumes of what it would look like. - Having said that, I can only praise the very noble effort you are making to renew and invigorate France's principal theatre and the care you take in the execution of modern things like the ballet in question " . He adds as a postscript: "We forgot to make up the faces of the demoisselles who, on the rocks, hold the green palms; they should make up their faces in dark ochre, because in this way their faces of midinettes standing out against the greyness of the ancient rocks are not particularly decorative; the other "rocks" are quite well made up in white".
