H: 38 cm Related work: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Ève après la faute, 1873, inscribed "JBte Carpeaux 1873", terracotta, H. 38 cm, London, Victoria & Albert Museum, inv. no. A.18-1984. Related literature: Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre édité, Paris, Les éditions de l'Amateur, 2003, p. 81, model referenced under n° SE 5. Refugee in London during the war of 1870, during which the Auteuil workshop was partly destroyed by the bombings, Carpeaux made several models of statuettes, including this Eve after the fault. Our copy executed one year after his return from exile is a fine example of the Auteuil workshop's terracotta production. Carpeaux reorganized the already famous workshop in rue Boileau where, having acquired a kiln, he now manages all the stages of the production of these terracotta statuettes. The process was then perfectly perfected and, from the choice and mixing of the terracotta to the firing and the special patina, Carpeaux mastered and supervised all the stages of this art of the multiple. Our Eve, in a superb state of freshness, is a remarkable example. There are only nine examples listed and the imprint here is of tremendous vigour. The clay is reclaimed with great skill and the original patina, pink, with warm and carnal tones, is typical of the body of virtuoso works produced in the artist's studio during his best years, between 1873 and 1874.
