Archaeology
Two cataloged auctions each year
Archaeology enthusiasts are fascinated by ancient civilizations: Greek, Etruscan, and Roman antiquities, ancient Egypt... The art of ancient Rome flourished across numerous mediums, such as sculpture, jewelry, and goldsmithing—works that often depicted the gods and goddesses of mythology. Greek deities also greatly inspired the artists of ancient Greece, who were particularly renowned for their black-figure and red-figure vases and other ceramics. As for ancient Egypt, most objects are funerary in nature and also reference the deities. Within this field, buyers place great value on the provenance of collections; they favor well-documented objects that may bear old auction labels or labels from previous collections.
A Word from the Expert
“The Cycladic idol remains the absolute icon of the archaeology market. These marble statuettes dating from ancient Greece are extremely rare—and virtually absent from public auctions. A few examples are occasionally offered at auction, often in a fragmented state. But even if the statuette is headless, or conversely if only the head remains, it can still easily fetch over €10,000. These goddesses of fertility are now found in major collections, where they are jealously guarded by their owners.”
