Russian Art

One to two cataloged auctions each year

Russian art auctions cover a large part of Russian history from the 18th century to the present day (the imperial era, the emigration period, and the post-Soviet era). Paintings, graphic arts, and sculpture are featured in these auctions. They also include military and historical memorabilia, decorative arts, and religious art. Art from other Eastern European countries is also represented.

A Word from the Expert

“While 18th-century objects are often featured in our Russian art auctions, it is very rare to find earlier works dating from the 17th century. Yet this period is particularly interesting, especially for its silverware adorned with cloisonné enamel and precious stones. The artistic style of the era was still very Eastern in character, marked by Byzantine influence, whereas in the following century, inspiration would come more from the West. The reason these 17th-century Russian works are so rare is that they were produced in very small numbers at the time and are now preserved in museums. However, some may still remain in the major collections assembled in the 19th century.”
