Gold, Bullion & Numismatics
Four to six cataloged auctions each year
Gold, precious metals, and numismatics have their own department, where buyers and numismatists can easily find all lots in this category: coins, medals, assignats, decorations, as well as bullion and foreign coins. Practiced since ancient times, coin collecting continues to attract new numismatists—many of whom are knowledgeable collectors often specializing in a specific area of collecting. Some foreign coins can fetch several hundred thousand euros—up to €550,000, for example, for a 1927 $20 coin minted in Denver....
A Word from the Expert
“There is a real market craze for Roman gold coins, particularly for denarii from the 1st century B.C. It is not uncommon to find this type of coin in collections assembled in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the vast majority of which are now forgotten at the back of a drawer or in an attic... The condition and legibility of these coins are decisive factors in auction results, which can increase tenfold depending on these two criteria. In fact, prices are sure to skyrocket if the strike is well-centered, free of blemishes, and features a perfectly legible inscription.”
