Ahmed Cherkaoui: A Major Work

Ahmed Cherkaoui: A Major Work

Created in 1964, *Signs in the Sky* belongs to the mature phase of Ahmed Cherkaoui’s work, a time when the concept of the “Sign” emerged as the very foundation of his artistic exploration. The particularly evocative title sheds light on the poetic and spiritual dimensions of this approach: it is no longer merely a matter of inscribing forms on the canvas, but of bringing forth a suspended, almost cosmic language.

In Cherkaoui’s work, the sign breaks free from any descriptive function to become an autonomous entity, imbued with a memory that is both intimate and collective. Drawn from a vocabulary borrowed from Moroccan folk traditions—tattoos, textile patterns, protective symbols—these elements are here transposed into an open, ethereal space, as suggested by the title itself. The “sky” is not a motif, but a field: a place of elevation where the signs seem to float, organize themselves, and interact in a free-flowing dynamic.

The composition unfolds like a constellation. The forms—sometimes dense, sometimes evanescent—establish a rhythm that evokes weightless writing. The painterly material, worked with intensity, lends these signs a vibrant presence while preserving their air of mystery. Hovering between appearance and disappearance, they contribute to a subtle balance in which the artist’s gesture becomes a form of visual meditation.

Presented in 1964 at the Galerie Jeanne Castel—whose catalog features a preface by Gaston Diehl—the work marks a pivotal moment of recognition on the Parisian art scene. Diehl emphasized the uniqueness of this painting, which, far from imitating Western trends, invents a universal language drawn from deeply rooted sources.

*Signs in the Sky* thus emerges as an exemplary synthesis of Cherkaoui’s quest: to elevate the sign to the status of language, and to make painting a space of correspondence between the visible and the invisible.
