A Renoir with an exceptional pedigree

A Renoir with an exceptional pedigree

Our Impressionist and Modern Art auction will feature a *Still Life with Strawberries* by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919), an oil on canvas painted in 1908 (estimate: €100,000–150,000).

Notre vente d'Art impressionniste et moderne présentera une Nature morte aux fraises de Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), huile sur toile peinte en 1908 (estimation : 100 000 – 150 000 €).

Intimate in size (30 × 38.5 cm) and signed in the lower right corner, the work belongs to the series of still lifes that Renoir produced in abundance during his later years, in which the blended brushstrokes and the warmth of the reds take precedence over the precision of the subject.

Its provenance is exceptional. Acquired directly from the artist by the Durand-Ruel gallery on August 4, 1908, it subsequently passed to Bernheim-Jeune (1912), then into the collection of Louis Bernard, before entering that of the art dealer Paul Rosenberg—thus tracing a lineage of the great champions of Impressionism. The painting was exhibited as early as 1910 at the Venice Biennale, in the solo exhibition hall dedicated to Renoir.

The work appears in the Bernheim-Jeune catalogue raisonné (Dauberville, vol. IV, no. 2765) and will be included in the online catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by the Wildenstein Plattner Institute.
