SAINT-POL-ROUX (1861-1940). L.A.S., Manoir de Cœcilian, Camaret January 3, 1935, to Mlle Renée Moulin; 2pages in-4.
Beautiful letter about Ephraïm Mikhaël.
Ephraïm Mikhaël, had he not died so young, "would undoubtedly be the leading poet of our time". Saint-Pol-Roux recalls the meetings at his Montmartre home in 1885, where, with Pierre Quillard, Camille Bloch, Bernard Lazare, Rodolphe Darzens and others, they founded the first Pléïade, then the second "from which finally sprang (1891) the Mercure de France. Mikhaël seemed to us a rare chosen one of Beauty. [...] He knew everything literary: a veritable well of diamonds. With desolation in our souls, we followed the convoy that carried so much hope. Our little group was losing its Soleil. [...] Mikhaël's admirable poems are not before my eyes, but their enchantment reigns within me, through the dazzling impeccability of his pure art. I'll always be proud of his dedication of the Herodiola. When he had achieved some masterpiece, he would climb my four flights of stairs to communicate it to me [...] with him gone, I imagined that a young god had visited me"... He recommends writing to Rodolphe Darzens for more details, and to Maeterlinck who had known him as a young man. He adds: "As a survivor, Ephraïm Mikhaël would, in my opinion, have completed Baudelaire and Samain, and no one would have equaled his splendor: he is a genius who will never have been known".
We enclose 12 l.a.s. to Mlle Moulin concerning Mikhaël by André-Ferdinand Herold (2), Yves-Gérard Le Dantec (2), Maurice Magre, Jeanne Marvig and Joseph Rozès de Brousse (5) and Francis Viélé-Griffin.
