[François de Salignac de La Mothe FÉNELON]. Manuscript, Reponse de Mgr l'Archevesque de Paris a Mgr l'Archevesque de Cambray, [1698]; 64 fol. pages, stapled in a dominoté paper cover.
Important document concerning the Quietism quarrel.
Period copy of the reply by Louis-Antoine de NOAILLES (1651-1729), Archbishop of Paris from 1695 to 1729, to the four letters written by Fénelon in reaction to Mgr de Noailles' pastoral instruction concerning quietism, and condemning (at Bossuet's instigation) the Explication des Maximes des saints sur la vie intérieure. According to Cardinal de Bausset, Fénelon received printed copies of this reply just four days after receiving it by hand.
Mgr de Noailles takes a firm stand against Madame Guyon: "This woman whom you admired and wanted admired, soon destroyed by her conduct the opinion that people distinguished by their virtue had conceived of her on your testimony". He relies on Bossuet's opinion and refutes all the arguments presented in Fénelon's letters, and finally asks the Archbishop of Cambrai to submit to the Church: "Aren't these disputes, so tedious and so long, more capable of troubling her than edifying her?
