A beautiful, perfectly preserved Kanaga mask, with its braided fiber rope net hood. The Kanaga mask is without doubt the most emblematic of all Dogon masks. The Kanaga mask dances and twirls as it touches the ground, uniting the cosmic forces of the sky and the telluric forces of the earth, symbolized by the characteristic structure atop the mask. Exceptionally well preserved here, given the greater number of these masks in the collections, and its fragility, as well as its polychromy testifying to its age, make this a superb example.
Dogon, Mali
Wood, polychromy, leather, braided fiber cord, minor restoration (small reinforcements of glue and nails), age oxidation of the wood and patina of use.
H. 100 cm and L. 64 cm
