LOUIS XIV (1638-1715). L.S. "Louis", Paris December 31, 1662, to "ma tante" [possibly Christine de France, duchesse de Savoie]; 1page in-4.
Moving letter on the death of his eldest daughter, Anne-Élisabeth de France, born on November 18, 1662, and who died of a fluxion of the chest on the eve of this letter, December 30 of the same year. Louis XIV was deeply affected; it was the first in a long series of bereavements.
"My aunt, we have just suffered a loss which I have no doubt will affect you terribly. It is my daughter who died at two o'clock in the morning of a suffocating catarrh accompanied by fever [...]. Although her young age and the bateme she received the day before are considerations capable of lessening our regrets, I must admit that this blow is hard for me. God will send us, if he pleases, the solid consolations we must expect from him alone"...
