[HENRI IV]. FRIEDRICH IV von der Pfalz, frédéric iv (1574-1610) count palatine of the Rhine. Handwritten letter (minute or period copy), Heidelberg August 28, 1593, to Henri IV; 2 1/2 pages in-fol.
Important letter concerning the forthcoming conference of French Protestants in Mantes. [The King had abjured the Reformed faith a month earlier. The Mantes conference would take place from November 1593 to January 1594].
He approved her decision to "convene a great assembly of the princes seigneurs officers of his crown and other notable personages of one & other religion, to look together at what is of religion and of the State"... This consultation with the aim of relieving his subjects was such pleasant news, that he prayed to God "that he may be so pleased to preside by his Spirit in the midst of lad. assemblée que l'Esprit en soit à sa gloire - au bien des Eglises des français si long temps affligées, et au contentement tant des uns que des autres, a ce que [...] nous puissions bien tost voir la fin d'une si longue et tant dommageable guerre, ne doubtant point au surplus que V.A.R. tasche de faire en sorte que l'exercice libre de la vraie & chretienne religion, soit ni plus ni moins promis à ceux qui en font profession, comme aux Papistes de leur, chose qui sans doubte comblera son Royaulme de tout heur"... He invites him to consider the happiness and good of the Holy Empire, for so many years, for having accepted the pacification of religion... He regrets the recall of ambassador Pierre Canaye du Fresne, who nevertheless "will be able to serve infinitely in this assembly"...
