Henri BECQUEREL (1852-1908) physicist, discoverer of radioactivity. Autograph manuscript signed, Rapport sur les travaux de Mr André Broca, [1902 ?]; 5pages in-fol. Interesting report on the physics research work of André Broca (1863-1925, physicist and physician), who was running for the position of physics tutor at the École Polytechnique. This draft is extensively crossed out and corrected. Becquerel recalls that Broca, who graduated from Polytechnique in 1885, left the army after three years to devote himself to the study of science: "His name directed him to the Faculty of Medicine, his aptitudes to Physics. [...] In 1897, Mr. Zeeman's discovery of the influence of a magnetic field on the period of vibrations emitted or absorbed by light sources, an influence predicted by Mr. Lorentz's theory of electrons, immediately prompted the investigations of a large number of experimenters. Mr Broca was one of those who made a contribution to the new order of ideas. First of all, by means of a judiciously conceived experiment, he showed that through a very thin layer of magnetized iron, the phenomenon of magnetic rotatory polarization does not correspond to a variation in the period [...] then he investigated whether the conditions of symmetry that characterize light emission in a magnetic field would not manifest themselves with cathode rays [...]. In the same order of phenomena, we should also mention new results concerning disruptive discharges in a vacuum, and the existence of anode rays magnetically deflected in the opposite direction to cathode rays, and carrying metal ions which deposit on tube walls"... Etc. Enclosed: - a printout of André Broca's scientific titles and works, candidate for a position as physics tutor at the École polytechnique (7p.), listing 69 scientific publications up to 1902, supplemented by 3 sheets in André Broca's handwriting, of 32 other publications up to 1906; and an autograph manuscript by André BROCA, Pouvoir inducteur spécifique des conducteurs et pouvoir inducteur spécifique du verre en fonction de la fréquence (25p. petit in-4).
