Jean PAULHAN (1884-1968). L.A.S. "J.P.", August 28 [1938, to Maurice Sachs]; 4 pages in-8 on nrf letterhead.
Vigorous clarification of Sachs's relationship with Gallimard. After an explanation of the photo books on Paris and the detective novels, he remarks: "We have spoken only of the detective novels in your collection - and, in the majority of cases, with praise. If there is any injustice, it is against other publishers of detective novels". Then he sums up the case of Caillois's note, "whose studies are of admirable intelligence", and adds: "It doesn't seem to me that the high compliments you sometimes address privately to some of our collaborators quite compensate for the unpleasant way in which you have, on more than one occasion, spoken publicly (or even privately) about the nrf. I don't mind that it was, more often than not, in a state of drunkenness (I don't mean that in a bad way; drunkenness is a part of life, not the least important). I just don't see why drunkenness shouldn't throw you into excessive enthusiasm, as well as excessive malice, with regard to the current nrf. And I wish, in any case, that you choose: either to collaborate with the nrf (& to love it), or to break off all relations with it, and with me"... He can't admit he's been blabbing to Gaston Gallimard...

Attached is another L.A.S. to Maurice Sachs, [late 1937] (1 p. in-8), concerning the publication of Historiettes in the NRF, as well as poems...
