Alphonse DAUDET. 11 L.A.S., 1874-1875, to Gaston Klein; 11 pages in-12, one envelope and address (small flaws).
Friendly correspondence on the failure of a dramatic collaboration, accompanied by the file of Klein's lawsuit.
[When Fromont jeune and Risler aîné's project for a dramatic adaptation, with the help of Gaston Klein, failed, Daudet turned to Adolphe Belot; Klein then sued to have himself recognized as one of the authors of this theatrical adaptation; in August 1876, Daudet won the case against Gaston Klein. On September 16, Daudet and Belot's play premiered at Le Vaudeville].
The tickets show the friendly complicity between Daudet and Klein, but also the delays caused by Klein. - Champrosay [11.XI.1874] : "You're a pretty man with your illnesses. [...] And this piece? Animal, to think that I dawdled for a fortnight and that I would have used those two weeks on this drama. You're a cow. - [9. XI.1875]. "Have you seen Rossi in Kean? If so, write me your impression as soon as possible, or rather come and bring it to me one of these evenings before Friday. I'd like to mention it in my feuilleton"... - Monday: "Ami, Lève-toi. Take my copy to Le Soir [...] Go to Coquelin's, try to get some news, and come to Champrosay"... - "Wretch, beggar, pig, thief of poets' belongings, you've taken away my Breton pipe, so handy for work. You pimp!"... Invitations, etc.

The file used for the trial is enclosed: - copies of 13 letters from Daudet to Klein; - 2 l.a.s. from Klein to Daudet; - l.a.s. from Armand Silvestre to Klein; - l.a.s. from Klein to Daudet. from Armand Silvestre to Klein (June 17, 1876), giving his testimony on the end of the collaboration with Daudet (with minute of Klein's letter requesting this testimony, and copy of a testimony by André Gill); - printed copy of the conclusions filed by Klein's lawyer at the Court of Appeal; - copy of the judgment of July 14, 1879 delivered by bailiff; - 2 other documents concerning Klein and 2 autogr. notes from Klein.
