Carlo LASINIO (1759-1838). Collection of 56 original black pencil drawings, with autograph annotations, 1780; various sizes (from approx. 17.5 x 12.5 to 25 x 18 cm) mounted on laid paper leaves (35.5 x 25.5 cm), bound in a folio volume, brown basane spine (rubbed), red leather title label on upper board.
Interesting collection of copies of painters' self-portraits.
An autograph note at the head of the volume indicates that these portraits, taken from the collection of the "Real Galleria di Firenze" (Uffizi Museum), are sketches of drawings made by Lasinio in black pencil in 1780 for His Highness the Prince of Borck, Pole; Lasinio stamped his seal in ink with his coat of arms (unknown to Lugt).
Most of these drawings are annotated in pencil, with indications (sometimes very elaborate, especially for Titian or Rubens) of the technique used, hair and eye colors, clothes, etc. Below three of the drawings, Lasinio has stamped his ink seal with his coat of arms (unknown to Lugt). Below three of them, Lasinio has also written a biographical commentary in ink. Some of the drawings are enhanced with washes. At the head, Lasinio has compiled an index of the 56 portraits, from Antonio Caracci and le Guerchin to Rosalba Carriera and Jan van Calcar.
Lasinio's titles and coat of arms are calligraphed on the flyleaf.
Born in Treviso in 1759, Carlo Lasinio acquired a great reputation as an engraver. A professor of engraving at the Accademia in Florence, he moved to Pisa in 1807, where he was curator of the Camposanto, and died in 1838.
